Christmas with Stoffels 09

20 Dec - We visited Michael and his family in Leiwen. We drove through a heavy snowfall to get there. We exchanged gifts and ate a great dinner. Kim received some nice Villeroy and Boch pasta bowls for Christmas and a baking dish for her Birthday, I received a nice wine service set :) and Jamie received some earrings and candy. We gave Alfons several bottles of likors, Michael different foods like his favorite chips, brownie mix, several types of Cajun meals and for Petra, we had some "frustuck tischekarte" custom made for her to use at the guesthouse. These are ceramic signs for her to write the names of items on her breakfast table for guests.
We had Raclette - a traditional melted cheese meal from Switzerland. Basically, you place potatos, vegetables, and meat on a small pan and put chesse over it and let the cheese melt under a heating coil. It was a VERY great experience and great meal. www.raclette.com.au. This was similiar to what we had at the Garmish Christmas market except ALOT better :)

Mannheim Christmas Market

13 Dec - We had our first snow of the year and decided to visit the Mannheim Christmas Market. We decided to ride the train for the hour trip through the hills between us and wine country. It was a very nice train ride but cold. By the time we crossed the Rhine River, there was no snow to be seen.
The Market is very nice and huge!! approximately 200 booths selling ornaments, candy, food, spiced wine, food, jewelry, etc. There are rides for the small kids and alot of food :) We had a crepe, bratwurst, and a pork dish with sour cream and curry - VERY GOOD. It started to snow while we were there. I had a saumagen samdwich. Saumagen is a local dish that is sort of a meatloaf/sausage/spam with veggies and spices. REALLY good. There was a booth selling Moroccan pastries so we had Jamie speak Arabic to him and did a very good job!! The pasteries were good and the green mint tea - hot and excellent !!

Early Christmas Present

11 Dec - We gave Jamie her Christmas Present. This year, we will be taking the family on a 8 day trip to Egypt. Yep, Jamie can FINALLY use the Arabic she learned for the last 3 years. We leave 27 Dec and return 3 Jan. We will spend New Years Eve in Cairo overlooking the Pyramids. We will tour the Aswan Dam, Pyramids, Luxor, Sphynx, Cairo markets and more. 5 days are on a Nile Cruise that drops us off at different places daily. It should be great fun and memorable!!
We gave Jamie her report card money in Egyptian Pounds!!

School Award day

2 Dec - Jamie was one of about 18 kids to receive the Gold Award for 4.0 GPA for 1st Qtr. Jamie was appointed the Vice President of her 6th Grade class. She is serving on the Yearbook Staff.
She is participating in several academic competitions: National History day with a presentation and report on Anesthesia; eCyber Mission with a report on how to improve the quality of water in the school at a low cost; and now with Odyssey of the Mind where the team is given challenges with restrictions to figure out a solution.
Of course she is also doing Girl Scouts and volunteering with the little kids at Church.....Busy little camper!!

Christmarkets

Over the Thanksgiving weekend we visited 3 local Christmas markets. On Thanksgiving Day we visited the Kaiserslautern Market where our thanksgiving lunch consisted of mushrooms, brats, gluhwein and crepes!! On Sunday we visited Heidelberg then Speyer. Heidelberg is a beautiful old city with a wonderful university. Speyer is on the Rhine and is home to the "greatest roman church in the world". It was constructed 1030-1124. It is a large and beautiful church. Oma and Jamie share a chocolate covered pinapple treat in Speyer.

Oma, Jamie and Kim enjoy a Bratwurst in Heidelberg. We also tried our first "roasted chestnuts".

Thanksgiving 09

28 Nov - Thanksgiving. We invited our prior Landlord and family over to share Thanksgiving. On Friday, Annette and Lena, Jamie's German tutor, joined us in cooking pies. They learned alot about how different things are packaged, what ingredients we use - sweet potato and pumpkin are not widely used in cooking in Germany. They also helped cook cornbread for the dressing.
On Saturday, Matias, arrived to lend a "hand" to prepare the turkey and dressing!! We had 13 people for lunch on Saturday. It was very nice and we had a great time. All our friends enjoyed the food. Favorite desserts were in order - Pecan, Sweet Potato then Pumpkin. All we had left was a little turkey, dressing and cranberry sause - the rest was GONE!!

Swimming Update

What a crazy busy and great 2 weeks of swimming for Jamie.
Her home swim meet on 31 Oct was OK. She had 2 best personal times -in 200m Free and 50m back. She finished 5th in the 200M free and 3rd in the 50m back. She also swam in 2 relays.
On 7 Nov, she participated in a challenge swim with the team - each swimmer in her group had to individually swim 50x100m freestyle or 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) - yep - that's right!! Jamie swam 5km.
This past week she qualified for all 3 events in the European Forces Swim League Long Distance Championships in Italy over Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately, we had not planned on going this year................
- Tue 10 Nov she qualified for the 400m Individual Medley.
- Thur, 12 Nov she qualified for the 800m Freestyle.
- Friday, 13 Nov she qualified for the 1,500m Freestyle beating the qualifying by 2:10 min.
Today, 15 Nov, she had a swim meet in Heidelberg and she did really well. She improved in all her events. Her two relays finished first in their heats. All three times are new best times.
- 50m Back - she finished 3rd and improved 1.2s and is just 1 sec from qualifying.
- 100m IM - she finished 4th and improved 1 sec but is still 5.5 sec from qualifying. She dies on the last leg of freestyle or she might have qualified.
- 200m Free - she finished first and improved 3.8 sec and is just 1 sec from qualifying.
Her next meet is this saturday here at Ramstein. We will be hosting 4 kids from Berlin and Belgium for the night and Oma will be here to cheer her on!!

We had a good lunch of leberknodel with kraut and Jamie and Kim split a roasted chicken - very good!! we rode the giant ferris wheel and took some great photos of K'town. Jamie and James went thru the crazy house and Jamie bumped the mirrors - ALOT!
